Gomel is an administrative center of Gomel region, it is the 2nd city in population (around 482 thousand inhabitants) and one of the most ancient cities of this country. Gomel is located in the south-east of Belarus on Sozh river, it is about 300 km from the capital of the republic, the city of Minsk.
Gomel was mentioned for the first time in 1142 in the Hypation Chronicle as a possession of the prince of Chernigov. Many different legends exist explaining how the city has got such a name. According to one of them, many years ago the flowing river in this location was very shallow and sailing ships could settle to the bottom. Fishermen fishing on the river bank were aware of that feature and when they saw some approaching river vehicle they tried to attract attention by shouting "Go, go, mel!", what meant "Th,th, Shoal!". Apparently, the sailing ships took it as the name of the location through which they were passing by. They believe that due to it the city got its name.
The city of Gomel is a beautiful place having its own unique architecture, interesting lifestyle and, of course, rich history. Nowadays Gomel is the city where architectural structures of the 19-20th centuries have managed to reach us in the same condition. While walking along Gomel, it is possible to say that in the city both ancient times and modernity intertwine together: old buildings have been renovated and the city looks like newly built. The majority of the sights will be able to surprise many travelers. In Gomel there is the Museum of local lore, the Korenevsky Estate with a pond, the Vetkovskiy Museum of Old Believers, the Hunting Box.
However, the main place of historical importance in the city of Gomel is The Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace. One of the most unusual modern buildings of Gomel is the Circus built in 1972, that has got the shape of a flying saucer. This building was considered to be one of the most scandalous ones that time, which didn't meet the standards of the Socialist Realism.
Gomel is a cultural city: it's got the City Park with a swan pond, green spaces and with the access to Sozh river. There are also a lot of different themed museums, fountains, beautiful squares, alleys and monuments.
